Nasty Foxfur / Rosso Malpelo

This short novel was written by Italian writer Giovanni Verga in 1878, and depicts the miserable life of Nasty Foxfur, a young boy who worked in an underground mine in Sicily.
Treated like an animal because of his red hair, that at the time in Sicily were considered being an association to the devil, all he knows is violence. After his father dies, the only person who loved him, Foxfur is on his own.
Eventually he becomes friend with a kid named Frog, but when Frog dies too Foxfur decides to take up an impossible mission in the tunnels of the mine and die.
I chose to illustrate this powerful story mainly for teenagers in bullying age.
The images are a collage of original photographs from Sicilian mines and my paintings.
