Nathan Baller's Aspen Sugar Spoon Video

  • Nathan Baller

Nathan Baller shares of the before and after of his sugar spoon project. Nathan Baller found a fallen Aspen tree while wandering behind a friend’s cabin in Summit County, Colorado. Nathan grabbed a few half-dollar sized branches for small projects like butter knifes, measuring spoons, sugar spoons and coffee scoops. This spoon started as a quarter sized Aspen branch. It has been roughed out using a whittlers knife and a sweep gouge. For a very small carving, there is a lot of nice spalting visible. Spalting is unique coloring within the wood caused by stress or damage. This particular spoon still needs to be finished, sanded and sealed with a food-safe wax/oil mixture.
