National Eisteddfod of Wales

  • Seren Hawley-Plows

The Installation represents the beauty of decay in nature, specifically decayed Welsh poppy (Meconopsis cambrica) heads. The poppy itself has been an important symbol throughout history and folklore, with cultures worldwide writing about its medicinal uses or using it to symbolise peace, sleep, death and rebirth. I have used copper wire, copper mesh and the element of fire to re create the effect of the poppy seeds. My own addition to this installation is to spiral and twist the ends of the seed pods, using the spiral as an added symbol of repetitive and cyclic patterns of nature. The immersive installation will act as a meditative space for the audience to calmly reflect on their lives, feelings and emotions, and the natural flow of nature.
