New Hokkaido Seltzers: Fruit Yokai

  • Emile The Illustrator

I was asked by Sally Morrow Creative to design and illustrate five yokai (Japanese spirits) inspired by – and combined with – the fruit flavor of each seltzer. I was also supplied with the copy on each can to direct the outcome.

YUZU ONNA Brief description:
THIS YOKAI HIDES IN FRAGRANT
YUZU ORCHARDS AND, DISGUISED
AS DAZZLING SUNLIGHT, SLIPS
AWAY WITH YOUR HEART.
MAJI MANGO Brief description:
THIS YOKAI SAYS “EAT ME,” AND HE
MEANS IT. EVERY TIME SOMEONE
DOES, POOF, THERE HE IS AGAIN,
SMILING HIS MANGO SMILE.
DASAI DRAGON Brief description:
SEE THAT FELLOW HOBBLING AROUND
THE TEMPLE? HE LOOKS AS SWEET AS
A DRAGON FRUIT BUT HE’S PRICKLY AS
A DRAGON GUARDING HIS TREASURE.
PINEAPPURU Brief description:
NICE KITTY? NOT THIS YOKAI.
SHE EATS NICE KITTIES—AND
BEARS, BOARS, PINEAPPLES,
AND MAYBE EVEN YOU.
LYCHEE KOZO Brief description:
WATCH OUT! THAT YOKAI BOY
WITH ONE LYCHEE EYE IS HIDING ,
WAITING TO STARTLE YOU.
HE LOVES LYCHEE. AND MISCHIEF!
