Nick Foster the creative lead for Advanced Design set us the challenge of discovering ‘wonderlust’ within mapping. How can we feel free and have a sense of adventure whilst still using maps?
As a team of four we approached the five-week task as a challenge and physically explored ideas, experimenting with a variety of lo-fi techniques that complemented our poetic aim for ‘wonderlust’. ‘Beyond Cartography’ was our aim and focus, everything but the map! This free spirited and committed approach is why the project could evolve and caught Nick’s imagination and attention, to be the winning proposal and finally be shortlisted for the ISA award.
It was obvious that we complemented each other as a team and all had our own roles to play. By the end of the five weeks, ‘Beyond Cartography’, truly felt like a small design collective.
