Not That Easy

'Not That Easy' was an adaption of Dave Smith's 'It's Not Easy', a selection of verbatim stories collected from asylum seekers in the UK. The production used two of these stories, 'Mary' and 'Rep', to show how the UK's system for processing refugees puts those fleeing injustice through unnecessary further trauma, to the extent that it threatens their health. Each story was spoken by three actors, who interchanged between sections, and those who were not speaking recreated their stories in silhouette behind the speakers. This highlighted distance between hearing a story told to you and attempting to imagine a situation that is so different from the experience of the majority of us here in the UK.

'Despite the difficult task of taking on such a delicate subject, the cast and crew who were directed by second year English student, Jasmine Silk, managed to create a sensitively handled performance with a powerfully conveyed message about the dark reality of life as a refugee.' - That's What She Said Magazine
