Nu-clear

  • Giulia Scarantino

The aim of this work is to explore the concept of art as a link with the real world and the social context remixing something that already exist to create a new work, with a new identity and function. The shots were taken just a few miles from Latina, my town in Italy, where there's a nuclear power station still escapes radioactive slag in the area. For this reasons, there's an abnormal increase in cancer cases in this area. It is out of use at the moment but thanks to the nuclear strategy that the executive Berlusconi has already launched several months ago, the power station will be restored. This work, doesn't want to tell if the national politic evolution's plan could become more dangerous for the ambient or not (because it's obvious) but simply generate any question about it in each of us. The audio-track is remixed by me in synch with the video-clips and sometimes pitched in relation with the saturated acid colors I choose for the images. The sound source comes from a noise-artist called Riotslug, probably Australian but nobody seems to be sure about it, discovered surfing on a Rome based net promotion&distribution label called Selva Elettrica. The idea is to communicate the dangerous activity of this place, even if it appears static, abandoned and fixed. "nu - clear" is related to the mission of the works itself to make visible the dismissed and forgotten, and create a "nu" consciousness. Sound Source: from Riotslug Sound and Video: Giulia Scarantino
