Numerals

When using numbers, spell out one through nine; for 10 and up, use numerals. Example: The elderly woman owned three dogs and 11 cats.Do not begin a sentence with a numeral, unless it refers to a specific year. Example: Two thousand people were left without power after the storm./ 1692 marked the infamous year of the Salem Witch Trials.Use Roman numerals when referring to wars, monarchs, or Popes. Example: World War I, King Louis VIII, Pope Benedict XVI.Ordinal numbers—first through ninth—are spelled out, but 10th and higher are written as figures. Example: Andy earned a second place finish in the race, but Sally came in 25th.Money is expressed through numerals. For cents amounts or amounts exceeding $1 million, spell out the words "cents" or "million, billion" etc. Example: The man had $57.68 in his pocket when he was mugged./The candy bar costs 99 cents./The actress made over $30 million last year.
