Candle heat singed my face She leant forward, Daring me to make a wish. Why the fuss? They’d exchanged ‘tense words’ again Arguing through the night. I couldn’t sleep Yet I couldn’t make it right. Now dad’s crying And mum wants to take my picture “Blow out the goddam candles,” to my right, she offers a tight whisper. All this falsity Just to mark the day “That’s it – I want peace, love and laughter,” I silently prayed. Ten today and wishing for a change of things; I puffed out my cheeks, Took a sharp inhale And got them all in one. Excited to see what the next decade brings.
