Soho exists in its own universe : an electric mix of people, cultures, communities with it’s own spirit and identity. This identity is homogenous, it is made of mant but it had a totality that is recognized but not always capable of being simply understood. It demands attention, it forces change within and beyond itself. But it is incapable of being controlled and may not always sumbit to easy translation.

We drew an analogy from the sky, space, planets, and galaxies that we felt related to the complexities and identity of Soho. Soho has its own universe with an eco system of creativity that sustains and fuels its identity. It can be dark, like the sky, but the stars provide illumination and light to show it is not a dead, morbid thing. The universe is alive, changing and moving. It has its own internal rhythms but is not immune to the forces that surround it.
So we believe the spirit of Soho has the force and inner dynamism that works within itself but also yields to the changes that come from without, which is fuses and blends to sustain its own world. Still itself, still of itself and still alone but connected and influential.

Our group wanted to reflect this analogy and use our creator influences to express how we see, feel and understand this spirit. We wanted to use dance, movement, dark and light to illustrate the emotions that Soho represents. We decided not to use music as the universe is silent and it is rather the movements and feelings of the dancer that must be at the heart of this installation.

We took inspiration from the singer “FKA Twigs”, who helped to take our thinking further. She has her own unique style which cannot be compartmentalised into a simple genre. It stands alone, with the focus on expressing emotions based on her own interpretation on the music that she loves. This helped our group to use dance as a way for us to represent our ideas and emotions. So, using these inspirations we set out to create a dream like world with an eerie atmosphere to captivate and intrigue the audience. They watch and see many things. They can force that moves to its own rhythms, slowly, frame by frame, building uo layers of images, movements and effects.
The dancer is moving in her own space, expressing anger, frustration and the isolation of the creative spirit that is alone with her emotions. The dance routine seeks to be dramatic in the expression of these emotions, eliciting the curiosity of the audience to understand and connect with the dancer’s narrative. Throught the construction of the performance, it builds intensity and a powerful bond that goes beyond the individual dancer and her feelings to those that stand and watch.
This performance seeks to mirror the world of Soho. Soho has its own rhythms and emotional world with small intricate streets and hidden parts. It demands to be looked at, to be watched, but it doesn’t seek the attention of the audience, the audience are captivated by what they see.
