Peonies

  • Karine Paronyanc

Peony flowers transform into laconic contrasting spots of pure spectral colors. Living, dynamic, spatial planes appear to be floating on the surface of a bright decorative background, ignoring everyday reality. Completely abandoning dependence on a genre of conventional still life or landscape, only the essence and quintessence of a flower is left, something that transcends the framework of an imaginary vase or flowerbed. Chiaroscuro gives way to a living line, light and dexterous like hieroglyph calligraphy. Peonies are a delight, femininity, love, admiration, anticipation, romance and freshness. The flower is an indisputable symbol of love, domesticity, and sensuous desire, as well as richness, prosperity, and good fortune in Chinese tradition. The continuous whirlpool of life, reverent attitude to nature’s laws, and an absolute joy of being are the essence of this collection.
