Portrait of ANNA LAPWOOD

  • Richard Cannon

I was commissioned to photograph Anna Lapwood an incredible talent. She is a conductor, organist and broadcaster, along with serving as Director of Music at Pembroke College, Cambridge. These images were shot in the Chapel against the backdrop of this manificent Mander Organ from 1708. Since time was limited I chose to shoot these images with available light perched on a large ladder.

It was a tricky place to stand but Anna took to it with ease. Especially as it was quite high up

I then went up onto the balcony where the organ is situated and look around for another suitable spots to take some more portraits. There was one spot with stacks of song books which could have worked for a backdrop but then I noticed this large black netted blind I could shoot through that made for some unusal images. This time I used one of my spot lights to highlight her face.

I moved the blinds into different positions to create some more different images and also for the viewer to see howe the portraits were formed.

It always makes for some great pictures if the subject is into wha you are trying to accomplish. she couldnt really see me behind the blind and had to guess where to look. I also had to make sure my focus was spot on to get the right look. There were also space contraints and I had to climb carefully around the bck of the organ to get far enough away from the subject. The pictures were used very well in the magazine.
