Pretty Ugly is an event in Norwich which mainly plays genres under the Hip Hop umbrella. The event/night is called Pretty Ugly and the idea behind it is to take our audience through a sonic journey through the versatile genre. The name is based on juxtaposition and the contrasts you often see in the genre. An example of this would be the ‘rags to riches’ or ‘rose among the thorns’ narrative.  The DJ sets will be consistent of B Sides, Deep Cuts and all things Hip Hop (as stated on the poster) and within that will be original songs that have been sampled in the genre which will then be mixed into the song it has been sampled in. For example, Lou Reed’s ‘Take A Walk On The Wild Side’ to A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Can I Kick It’.  This event is being curated by Ivan Andrade/Jives who is a crate digger, hip hop purveyor and DJ and also runs Boom Bap Festival (UK’s largest Hip Hop festival), Tropico and Blueprint Festival and Stephen Gombakomba/Tadi the Great who is an artist and crate-digger who heavily explores sampling and is also a DJ (Tropico/Play Nice).
