Project Strategy & Campaigns

  • Scott Wilson
THE PROJECT:

2015 was the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta, and I worked with the 800th Anniversary Committee to deliver it. The historical significance of this date (15th June, 2015) was marked with an international celebration. Across 2014 and 2015 the Committee delivered events with our 100+ partner organisations that united more than 60 countries across the world.
I worked from home and in office, and visited organisations at times.

COMMUNICATIONS & STRATEGY:

I started work in August 2014 and my first brief was to galvanise Magna Carta 800th's social media. The accounts I inherited were slow and had been missing opportunities. With little time left before 2015, I revised our strategy and circulated it with our partner organisations. New posts were events - driven, and signposted to content on our website. We received much more engagement, and feedback from my plan called it 'crucial' and of 'endless help.'

Similarly, I was given the brief to direct the site (www.magnacarta800th.com) with the aim of it being the most comprehensive hub of Magna Carta information online. This has been achieved, and both our social media and website experienced enormous levels of engagement at peak times. The British Library has agreed to archive the site for posterity.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT, ASSESSMENT, & UK GRANT:

My role soon expanded outside our communications strategy. Thanks to a grant of £1 million from the UK Government, the Committee was in a position to fund more than 100 legacy projects worldwide. Features of many of these projects are ongoing into 2016. Hundreds of grant applications were separated across 6 project rounds, and the merits of each application was considered by the Committee. In total c. 100 organisations received grant money. With the Executive Director of the Committee, I liaised with each project lead on multiple issues (including but not exhaustive: finance, governance, publicity, timetables), and ensured our records were up to date.

Project achievments included (but are not limited to):</br>
- Opportunities for disabled people
- Opportunities for service users
- Opportunities for those with learning difficulties
- Opportunities for adult learners
- Opportunities for children
- Development of new educational resources
- Funding exhibitions
- Events in schools
- Citizenship / Human Rights resources
- Community engagement / outreach
- Funding for books
- Several international lecture series and conferences
- Digital development

Each project was unique, and as such my understanding of key performance indicators were developed on a careful project - by - project basis. This was excellent development for my communication and project analysis skills, and in 2016 I am in a position to expand my list of clients and assist other organisations in their grant application processes.
