Project - This is Not Nostalgia? - Kate

With a focus on portraiture and fashion, my practice frequently draws on the influence of the past in today’s world to question the idea of nostalgia, sustainability and consumerism. My series ‘This is Not Nostalgia?’ began in 2016 and set out to explore whether curating influences from the past necessarily means the images themselves are 'retro'. There is frequently an historical influence to my work, but I do not seek a revival. The images offer a nod to an era, but they are not made to take the viewer back to the past. I bring components of the past into the present. In 2016 I wrote my dissertation on the influence of the seventies on image makes with Disco being a starting point. This work was made in 2018.
