QUARTIERE DELLE VALLI, Laru lab

  • Rok Bogataj

I was invited to participate in a project that deals with urban regeneration in six suburbs or abandoned areas of six municipalities of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. The Urban Regeneration Laboratories aim to deepen the investigation on how art and culture can become drivers of citizenship activation in the regeneration processes of the suburbs. My area was Quertire delle valli in Tolmezzo, Italy. The suburb area of Tolmezzo was built for the emergency after strong earthquake in 1976. This district is abandoned to himself and the infrastructure is in the process of degradation. I was work and participate like a part of the community for one week. In a hard-gray winter time I was there to awaken and stimulate the present questions about an improvement of life of the district. For these reasons, my intervention was placed in a communal place of the district to have major visibility and more possibility to provocative the problems. I decided to work on what they like, what don't have and what to do for better living in the community and have a better aspect of the city. I must note that the district has nickname Bronx. When I was entering, I felt the place like there is no habitant, dead place. At the same time, I felt that I come to disturb the ambiance that all inhabitants, living and dealing with solitude and nobody care what in the future can really happen to change an atmosphere of the district. I was talking with a few inhabitants and all complain what is wrong. But the major problem that I find it's that people don't communicate between them. All those problems I was elaborated in my public intervention on green spaces in the district. I designed the signs of communications, directly on a grass. The work was made in collaboration with the Municipality of Tolmezzo and Kallipolis (Association for social development and support with legal personality).
