Director for RENT by Jonathan Larson. Staged at The Redbridge Drama Centre in April 2022. Presented by IODS Productions.

This was the first show I have had the pleasure of Directing for IODS Productions. The process for me began in September 2021 with research and development. I spent four months researching the period, the HIV / AIDS pandemic and what it was like to be a struggling artist in the late 1980s / early 1990s. I watched documentaries, films, tv shows and read books on the HIV / AIDS Pandemic to really understand what it was like to live throughout that period. I decided very early on that I wanted to make the performance feel real and truthful. I approached directing the piece in a totally different way to any other piece I've directed. From the start of the rehearsal process, it was all about collaboration and workshopping ideas. The Cast and I went on a journey of discovery as we explored different thoughts, feelings and emotions together to create an honest, truthful piece of theatre that audiences would believe. I worked extensively with the actors who played Roger and Mimi to discover what their real emotion would be if they were fighting in real life. "Congratulations to Dylan Lee for a fine job as Director. This was no easy gig and takes a skilled director to embrace the themes and weave in so many great details and moments. The show had pace and discipline, emotional scenes and believable characters. Rent is first and foremost about relationships and the complexity of these worked well.
