Residue (2018)

  • Laura Blight

In Residue, dust serves as a language to communicate the human bodies’ resilience but in equal measure its fragility, taking up to two years to decompose. Organic matter predominantly made up of human hair and skin, this multilayered material is deeply interwoven with memories and emotions. In these artworks, I have covered the surface of everyday items in dust collected from various sources to represent the absent physical body and to question ideas of our own mortality. Juxtaposed by the aesthetics of the faux bathroom, I am to disrupt the viewers perception of interior space to create a confronting sensorial experience, alluding to what should be kept concealed. Dust functions as a by-product of the real and a vital layer of our dense reality.
