Resort Culture

For my final major project i focussed on imagery of holiday/ vacation destinations and resorts. To create a body of work that rebrands a fictional hotel/bar/pool. Looking at ‘design’ hotels such as The Ace or The Standard I wanted to bring this strong focus on aesthetics to traditional holiday destinations like Florida/Spain, typical travel agent hotspots. Combining elements of good design with imagery found within the pages of holiday brochure to make a collection of work designed to revamp a Florida hotel.
Within my prints I have created fluid marks, unlike traditional screen-printing which offers a clean perfect image, I was looking for something more experimental and painterly. Looking at hotels such as The Standard which focus heavily on displaying fine art I wanted to create pieces that were also considered art not just design, so began to make prints that were total one-offs that could not be replicated. The method I chose to employ these ideas was to mono-print directly onto an open screen and pull the image once.
The design I created for the chairs is essentially a bastardized un-foldable deck chair. Whilst traditionally wooden I wanted a sleek material that would be in keeping with a high-end hotel and also be a contrast to my loose prints, keeping in mind the art and design that I was marrying in my work. Metal was the natural choice for me, being sleek and durable to the weather, most importantly water damage.
