Riposte is a smart magazine for women, made by editor in chief Danielle Pender, creative director Shaz Madani, photography editor Gem Fletcher, features editor Liv Siddall and a roll call of excellent creatives. I've served as contributing editor since it's inception in 2013. Here's an excerpt from my article on action heroines. * * * The pill is a dirty secret. Ads threaten domestic abuse if your husband catches you buying the wrong coffee. “(I Can’t Get) No Satisfaction” is on the record player. The year is 1965 and you, average woman, are only meant to be reading about the latest in blancmange news, or how to crochet happiness. But there is a publication coming that means to change things... Join L.A. Ronayne in conversation with original trailblazers Caroline Baker and Harri Peccinotti as she dons deferential white gloves to leaf through Nova; the magazine that fast-tracked feminism and went on to influence 50 years of publishing. Founded by Harry Fieldhouse in the mid 60s - that era of seismic social change one hears a lot about in folk music - Nova billed itself as "The new kind of magazine for a new kind of woman". In marketing terms she was The AA Woman (above average income and intelligence) a dangerous, new demographic for The Mirror Group's magazines division.
