Riposte Nº8: Hero of Heroines — Why we need more men like Hayao Miyazaki

I've served as contributing editor since it's inception in 2013. Here's an excerpt from my article about the founder of Studio Ghibli.

Co-founder of Studio Ghibli, creator of internationally beloved anime and one of modern times’ most masterful storytellers; Mr Miyazaki is as famous for recurring themes of feminism, nature and pacifism as he is for wild imagination and craft. His complex heroines are a vital counterbalance to the Disney-induced “princess propaganda” that surrounds childhood. So as the world goes mad, let’s take a look at why his work is more important now than ever before.
Here we are at the beginning of a real-life disaster movie. The alternative-
fact slinging, right-wing resurgence baddies have risen to power. The central cast are rich, white men and violent extremists hell-bent on destroying the planet and casting humanity back to the dark ages. At best they downplay the importance of women’s rights; at worst they laugh super- villain laughs as they launch schemes to thwart us entirely. If the resistance is to stand a chance, we must seek the support of those who can show that there is a better way to be. And with that, rumours abound that Hayao Miyazaki is set to return from retirement...
