Robin Hanbury Tenison

  • Richard Cannon

Robin is an explorer, famous for travelling all over the world, visiting tribes, writing books and doing charity work. In May this year he had a seven week life and death struggle with Covid-19. For the first 5 weeks in hospital in a induced coma with multiple organ failure. He was on a dialysis and a ventilator and his lungs were filled with fluid. But a breakthrough came when his bed and all of its attached wires, tubes and machines, was wheeled out into Derriford Hospital’s “secret garden”. Mr Hanbury-Tenison was still unconscious as he was wheeled out. “I remember opening my eyes and getting a huge feeling that, ‘I’m back’,” he said. “It was the simplicity of a ray of sunshine on my face and the healing power of nature.” These portraits were shot soon after he returned home and were taken in his garden in Cornwall.
