Royal Court Theatre: You For Me For You

  • Aisling Callaghan
Root worked with the Royal Court Theatre to produce a series of posters for their Autumn 2015 season. We were given the script for each play and then were required to come up with a conceptual visual which encapsulated it. I worked on Mia Chung’s ‘You For Me For You’, which follows the journey of two North Korean sisters Minhee and Junhee as they attempt to flee the Best Nation in the World across the border into South Korea.

I produced a conceptual image and title type treatment featuring a frog (a recurring symbol throughout the play) with a wind up key in its back which has been engraved with symbols from both the North and South Korean flags. The frog’s eye has also unnervingly been replaced with a human eye. The wind-up key and the human eye are a reference to the mechanical oppressiveness of the Nation, and the ever-watchful eye of the government over its citizens.

The image was used on all the play flyers, on large scale posters inside the theatre itself, across the Royal Court website, and as the front cover of the play text. I also produced a teaser trailer in After Effects, adding subtle animation to the image, which was used in the Royal Court’s Twitter and Facebook campaigns for the season.
