Rugging

Lots of extra packaging is used nowadays to cover our food. Part of this packaging is made out of materials such as paper, plastic or aluminium, which are all recyclable, whilst others are made with mixed materials that make them not recyclable. Packaging for food is very important to protect our food from bacteria, to keep it fresh and to make the transport of food safe, however very often packaging is used even for a tiny amount of food. In addition, most of the packaging used for food in the UK is not recyclable, and it has a single use, after which is thrown away instead of being reused.

Rugging is a prototype of a rug made entirely by reusing 110 pieces of food packaging that are not currently recyclable, and it has been entirely hand stitched by using rug techniques. It can be used in a park as a cushion instead of sitting on the grass, but it could also be used as a non-conventional cushion for events.

Rugging is an invitation to people to think and reflect on packaging, and on whether people should choose loses instead of pre-packed foods.
