Ruggrapp (Ruggr-App)

  • Jamie Harris

I founded my own social media community within the sport of rugby union. What began with a community of 40,000 people. eventually became a rugby union mobile app, aimed at reminding fans when rugby was on TV, which channel, and which pub was showing it.

The Beginning

I founded a rugby union community by solving my own problem: when is rugby on Tv, and where can I watch it.
I began by collating all of the information surrounding rugby union TV fixtures. I'd then manage my social channels and schedule content reminding fans, using social media best practices to engage and develop my community.
Once people started seeing what I was doing, I began releasing the latest rugby news, in order to create a deeper sense of engagement with the community.
I was responsible for creating assets, analysing my social channels and adapting to the ever-changing landscape of social media.

Social Became Digital

After 12 months of developing this community, I embarked on the challenge of creating my own website. Naturally for a person in my shoes at the time, WordPress was the only viable option (low cost, minimal management).
I would manage the website on my own, creating blog content and collating pages of rugby TV fixtures within the UK and Ireland.
Once the website had enough traffic - and I made enough money - I began to design my app.
Six months later and I had an idea of what it looked like, mapped out a user journey, and designed the reminder system. I then hired an app developer to create the app and this became the foundation of the business.
Use my social channels to direct everyone to the app.
