SELF-PROTECTION: Through the Symbolic Language of Contemporary Jewellery

  • WENQING FAN

Social safety incidents do occur even when our social, economic, and cultural standards of living are rising. As an example, consider domestic violence, bullying, kidnapping, stalking, molestation, robbery and so on. People are hurt, and the feeling of safety within the community is diminished. In this uncertain social security environment, everyone is so little and helpless. How do we stay secure? How can we safeguard ourselves and feel secure? What are the limits of self-protection? My work involves engaging the public in dialogue on self-protection. Self-protection is investigated in the field of contemporary fashion jewellery by examining the relationship between individual identity and symbolism. I'm hoping that people will receive different messages from my work and engage in conversation about it and pay attention to it. The snake serves as a protection symbol throughout my artwork. It was regarded as a benevolent protector and healer in prehistoric Chinese and Greek societies. Additionally, the snake itself is very well-defended. For instance, its flexible bone structure can stretch and twist, its scales protect its body, and the fork in its tongue offers a sense of directional scent and taste, to name a few. It may also spew poison when swallowed and bitten.
