Serial Book Design

  • Oana Maries
This project included a serial book design for two books: The Metamorphosis (German: Die Verwandlung) novella written by Franz Kafka and the dystopian novella We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Both were written around 1920. The target group for this serial are educated young adult with interested in books also as an aesthetic object.

For the inside, I chose a layout with a large edge to give the sensation of opening and breath. I emphasized the "monologues" in Metamorphosis and the "counting days" through an external text dimension -closer to the edge that the main block of text.
For the inside, I chose a layout with a substantial edge to give the sensation of opening and breath. I emphasised the "monologues" in Metamorphosis and the "counting days" through an external text dimension -closer to the edge that the main block of text.
I used the serif typography Garamond Premier Pro - as a great asset for the reader to feel the atmosphere, but all the other elements are in contrast to compliment the visual appearance regarding the brief.
For illustration, I chose the main scenes I used current geometric direction with a sort of art-deco influence in Metamorphosis and a futurist approach in We. Using black as the main background for illustrated pages created the feeling of a contemporary and fresh approach. In contrast on the opposite can be found book vignette - on the white sheet as simple line arts looking from the main illustration.
The book covers to keep the main layout for both - being a book serial - and there is a white space that highlights the illustrations in the same style.
