Shipyards of Aberdeen

  • kate steenhauer
In this project the industrial life of the shipyards along the waterfront of Aberdeen through printmaking is explored.

I find myself engaged at the seaport in amongst the hustle and bustle along the quay; swinging cranes hoisting and lowering, energetic stevedores loading and unloading, whistles blowing and horns booming, swooping and calling gulls close and afar. At the foreground a great ship, an object of beauty and strength, flag waving, readying for another destination.

The atmospheric dramas of the docks deliver an intimate narrative of the relationship between man and machine.

Contemporary etchings of industrial scenes transport the viewer into a world of arresting detail and mechanised splendour; animating stories of a skilled labour force, absorbed in their work and at one with their environment.
