Siop Plas - Community Space

  • Emily Watts

As a cosy stop on a cold walk in the Welsh countryside, it was important for the cabin to feel both domestic and celebratory of the local area. Plas Carmel cabin was recently taken over by the community after laying empty for years. The space has been designed to be simultaneously a cafe, an information point and an activity space - so flexibility and furniture variety was key. Embracing the building’s previous life, and keeping in mind its environmental impact, many of the original features have been retained or re-purposed. The original shop counter and shelving are now populated with local produce, art and plants from the area. Colour accents, in the form of stained timber, contrast the warm tones in the floor, walls and ceiling. They bring a lightness and vibrancy that reflects the space’s lively nature.
