Snow Battle

  • David Montero
Simple game for two players using smartphones with TouchOSC as controllers. Dodge the snow balls thrown by your adversary using the device's accelerometer.

Insight
The brief was ideating an interactive installation using a SmartsLab low-res screen and mobile devices equipped with TouchOSC.

Idea
Whenever I hear low-res I think in 8bit, having grown in the 80s and being quite a gamer myself I'm a nostalgic of the good ol' simple and addictive games.
The setup for the installation was the front yard of Sydney Uni's School of Design and Architecture, were students hang around during the lunch breaks, for a smoke and in between classes, the perfect environment for an easy to understand multiplayer game.

Role
I was the technical head behind this project of two, the concept and programming of the game were mine while the cute penguin design relied on Susanne Chan's artistic skills.

Impact
Students quite enjoyed competing with each other, the controls were really simple and easy to learn since the penguins reacted directly to the movements of the players and the shooting used the same mechanism than the super popular Angry Birds.
