Social Issue Posters: From Coventry to Changsha

  • Ellen Covey
Catalogue/magazine documenting time on exchange trips between Coventry, UK and Changsha, China and displaying social poster work completed during the trips by both groups of students.

During an exchange trip between our two universities, students completed work on posters about modern social issues. This publication showcases these works along with statements from the designer, and responses by students from the other university. An interesting look at how our design methods and social perceptions differ with culture, this book was released at public exhibitions held simultaneously in Coventry and Changsha, alongside a website with corresponding interactive and moving work.

The book opens from both sides (a reference to the traditional way of reading from right to left in Chinese), one showcasing work by Chinese students, then flips in the centre at an illustrated double gatefold), and continues to UK students’ work—or vice versa. The covers also join over the spine to represent the exchange.

All content is included in English and Mandarin, and was translated by Youzhu (Bamboo) Zhang. Internal illustrations by Siti Mohamad. Art direction, layout, editing, cover and production by myself.
