Sounds from the Emergent State

Sounds from the Emergent State is a multi-screen video installation commissioned by the State Library of Queensland for the exhibition Live! Queensland Band Culture. The work explores the changing state of music in Queensland, from the influence of American soldiers on jazz during WWII, to the rise of punk in the 1970s and 80s, and the international emergence of Queensland bands toward the end of the twentieth century. Developed in collaboration with musicians, historians and music fans, the work combines historical records with people’s personal memories and impressions of bands and band culture. Spatially dispersing narratives across multiple projection surfaces, the installation poetically weaves together ideas about music, politics, social and cultural change. Created by Sarah-Mace Dennis, the work features an original score by Australian film composer, artist and multi-instrumentalist Eleanor C Logan.
