Sri Lanka Textile Project

  • Emily Kimura
In this project, we have been creating textile designs based on drawings by Sri Lankan children. The textiles developed by designers with the children are used to create various products that then go on sale. We believe in the idea that Sri Lankan children can contribute to the development of their surroundings through textile design.
Our project website was set up in October 2012, when the project moved from concept to reality. I’ve involved this project as a graphic and fashion designer to launch project. The project management team is working to promote our project and to expand its scale.
The aim of this project is to encourage young people who
are suffering in the third world, by supporting local creativity. We believe that our project has the potential to catch on throughout the world as a new collaborative design movement. The products generate funds that go back into the children’s communities, which is one of the primary pillars of this project.
We believe that we should think more about how to make improvements in the environments of orphans and displaced children. Unfortunate circumstances are the result of poverty, and commercial activity can be key in these regions for the achievement of economic stability. For this reason, we chose Sri Lanka in which to start this project. This project can help to provide employment to youth as well as adults, reducing poverty in the region. The cycle that we’re initiating, starting with the orphans and displaced children, can help to restore relationships between children and their communities.
