The project, “Store Brought” was based on the idea of boundaries and providing a demographic to work with. I was part of the group that was designated Black box boutique, and as a group of ten students we worked towards making an outfit each for an overall collection.
Black Box Boutique carries a nostalgic grunge aesthetic to their brand, and its reflected through their store, in their props/furniture and the designer labels they choose to stock. We wanted to keep true to that aesthetic because this is where Black Box is very successful, and what their cult following respond to; their edge and attitude. It is because of this consistency of style they have a loyal following.
I aimed to design something that provides the New Zealand menswear market with pieces that bring ultimate comfort but with formality, which based in my choice of quality fabrics. Often in New Zealand market you will find the comfort and durability in sportswear brands but it lacks elegance, or it has style but falls short of comfort. I wanted to create both.
