Surface Tension

  • Harri Närhi
Surface Tension explores the interplay between imagination and urban surfaces. It takes as its starting point the notion of the metropolis as a multi-sensory, often overwhelming, yet infinitely stimulating nexus of mind and matter. Digital manipulation grounded in the material surface of the city, as such, creates tension between what the city is and what it could be.

Urban centres, in all their familiarities and bizarre novelties, provide fertile ground for the experience of uncanniness. This unsettling sensation provokes questions about the limits of visual perception and reception of sensory information, and provides a framework for a reality where what you see is not always what you get.
