Synthetic Nature

  • Rachel Gallagher
As a designer working within interiors, there is a demand for safe florals, people are afraid to take risks with contemporary prints and bold colour. With a growing dependence on the digital world, the Synthetic Nature collection is an exploration into ways to manipulate natural forms to resemble their synthetic counterparts. This gives them a surreal and futuristic aesthetic. Synthetic nature is the chemical synthesis to imitate a natural product, the term often used within the sciences is now the sources of a new type of genetically-modified botanicals. For this collection manipulation techniques have deliberately damaged digital information to achieve a desired yet imperfect aesthetic. The use of saturated colours, pixelation and distortion of florals as a conscious design choice in this collection removes the need for conventionally appealing design.
