An enchanting story based on the novel, The City of The Beasts by Isabel Allende, my film adaptation follows the struggle of a young man, Alex, sent to live with his fierce, crazed grandmother Kate in Brooklyn, whilst his mother is battling cancer. She is a pipe-smoking, vodka drinking old reporter with eyes “as sharp as daggers’ points”. Kate is currently working for National Geographic and about to embark on an expedition to the dangerous, remote world of the Amazon rainforest, but rather than change her plans, she simply takes Alex with her. They are searching for “The Beast” and the land it inhabits, “The Eye of the world” – The City of Eldorado. To get to the city of gold, Alex and his entourage travel through a labyrinth of caves, filled with crystals and magical beings. When they come out the other side it is not quite what they were expecting…
