The Enigma Complex / ALBUM

  • Matt Broughton
T H E   E N I G M A   C O M P L E X  is a music-based project that explores themes of depression and the darker sides of the psyche. The aesthetic is highly sinister and macabre, yet it enlists a desire to promote the beauty of darkness; an indulgence of self-suffering.
The music is stylised as a concept album that depicts a mental expedition into the self, one by one confronting the many faces of our darker sides; such as phobia, lust, loneliness, hate, nihilism, self-destruction, anxiety and depression.
The title (or rather diagnosis) ‘The Enigma Complex’ is a fictional mental illness or state that encompasses these dark yet natural sides of ourselves, expressing that their orientations and causes are unknown and faceless, and are purely natural forces of human nature that are both unavoidable and ubiquitous. The only cure of this complex is to face and accept these dark internal states in order to usurp them.
The album artwork consists of a collection of images created through a broken printer scanner. The machine distorted the images and created the sense of a harsh and empty void where the subject matter had been brutally stripped of all elements save its inner basic core. Raw, dark, enigmatic and harshly beautiful.
