This piece was created for the recent Handmade in Kew exhibition where it was very well received.
It demonstrates almost 200 beautiful Monarch butterflies in their classic cluster formation trying to escape the confines of a sash window. The window is an original Victorian sash that has been lovingly restored then given a distressed effect. Each butterfly has been handcrafted out of paper. The top and underside are printed photographically and then handcut and bonded together. Each pair of hand created wire antennae are then attached and the butterfly is then positioned in place on glass.
This process creates an incredibly realistic looking mass of butterflies that appear to be attempting to escape the trappings of the sash window.
