The Kite Runner

  • Elle Mourdjis

The cover hints at the turbulent childhood friendship between the two main characters in the book: Amir and Hassan. In the narrative, Amir describes Hassan as ‘a boy with a Chinese doll face perpetually lit by a harelipped smile’. The two China doll faces on the cover reflect the fragility of their relationship, and the clef lip symbolises the themes of status comparison, betrayal and redemption.
