The Lab - Music Facilitation

  • Lubeto Kalwa

THE LAB was set up in 2015, co-designed with local young people. Every Wednesday, The Lab transformed a shop unit in North Finchley town centre into a pop-up music studio, providing young people with the space to write, record and produce their own music and socialise in a safe, creative and professional environment. With a talented team of youth workers and music practitioners, we used our skills and industry experience to teach the young participants how to use music equipment to a professional standard; allowing them to work with their peers to produce their own music. At the end of the programme, a mixtape is curated by the young participants which include the guidance of further mixing and mastering their musical masterpiece, providing them with the opportunity to showcase their work on industry platforms. Staff are not just creative professionals, they’re specialists in youth violence and experienced personal development mentors, on hand to support those require additional support. They provide on-the-spot mentoring and personal development support, helping young people to manage conflict, safety plan, access specialist support services and in making positive life choices. With industry experience, we're able to help mentor and demonstrate how to prepare a pitch to be shown to a record label as well as a supporting business plan and marketing campaign so they can experience first hand industry experience.
