The Memory Knot

  • Rachel Yeo

The objective of this project is to celebrate the older generation in our families, by stimulating conversations about untold stories, thereby creating memories through storytelling and encouraging oral traditions. For younger people to be more understanding of our elder family members and appreciate them better. To increase engagement between younger and older generations, especially regarding culture and preserving traditions in the home. This could help increase the presence and contributions of the older generation in creating the intangible “home”, through both personal memories as well as ethnic/religious culture. My choice of the material is print medium as having the physical product itself is effective for interaction between people, just like traditional card games. The project was created during Circuit Breaker period back in 2020, given this opportunity to bond with family, the conversation kit creates a purpose to connect better with our family members. The Memory knot is a conversation starter kit for family use. The kit includes a manual guide, conversation card and the narrating photo album that includes a voice recording device attached. This creates an opportunity for the older generation to share their past stories to preserve it for next generation later on. The younger generation could discover their grand/parents stories through listening while browsing through the old photograph in the album.
