The Mountain

  • Marina F. W.

Personal body of work exploring the archetype of the mountain and how it symbolises ideas of spiritual ascension, inner journey, union of opposites and axis mundi.

The mountain is the landscape for many pilgrimage routes and ascension journeys due to its difficulties and also the rewarding views at the top. "At the top of the mountain / At the foot of the mountain: an activity book for the pilgrim" is an artist book that delves on the importance of the journey itself and how to better connect with the mountain
In this quilted wall hanging, I’ve joined different pieces of fabric monoprints of some of the most famous mountains in different spiritual traditions (ie. Kailash, Ararat, Olympus, Sinai, Uluru, Athos…)
In this textile piece I work with the idea of the mountain as axis mundi or world pillar, a place where heaven and earth connect, the sun and the moon meet, and the sea and the sky are separated.
