The New Brutal

  • Margaux Soland

A curated series of workshops, tours and courses, looking at the influence of Brutalism - a 'like it or loathe it' architectural movement - on a variety of disciplines; from photography and ceramics to writing and print. Taking place in the Barbican shop, these creative events all link back to either a publication or product for sale in the shop, complementing the shopping experience, and culminating with a free private view during London Craft Week. Following on from our popular event season Make! A Season a Contemporary Craft, that took place in spring 2018, The New Brutal is the latest creative events season taking place in the Barbican shop. For this project I had to curate an events season from scratch, linking it to a relevant product range. The project's aim was to raise the Barbican shop's profile, establishing it as a destination in its own right, while ensuring a healthy financial return. Working closely with makers, press and marketing teams as well as operational teams, this project required in depth planning as well as business and operational acumen. Working across multiple platforms (from shop floor to digital content), I had to work with a variety of stakeholders; the project required me to be both adaptable and highly organised to ensure the smooth running of the events season.
