The Road to Ladakh: How to plan ALL your logistics

It is an amazing journey that takes you to Ladakh, where the sky turns a vivid blue hue, contrasted with the surrounding prayer flags, snow-covered mountains, stunning scenery, and friendly locals. Ladakh package experiences both dry and cold seasons. It has a long winter of beautiful frozen landscape from October to April, but it is also very beautiful. The summer heat from May to September, when the precious glaciers melt, is short and hot. This place is so beautiful that you will not be able to describe it.
The land of high passes, a union territory, is surrounded by the Karakoram ranges to the north and the Himalayan ranges to the south. Ladakh tour package is home to two districts, Leh and Kargil.

How to reach Ladakh

It is possible to connect by road and air. The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is Ladakh's highest airport, located at 3,256m above the sea level. It operates domestic flights. There are two routes available by road: the Manali-Leh Highway and Srinagar-Leh Highway.
You should take a road trip on the return journey. This gives you the opportunity to see the route and allows for a more relaxed way of getting home at the end. You can hire a vehicle from Srinagar, Manali or Ladakh.
A. Manali-Leh: This route is open from June to October, covering 473km. You'll cross Tandi Keylong and Jispa, Darcha and Baralacha La on your drive. You have two options: hire a car/gypsy/jeep, or take public transport such as buses which run between Manali & Leh. These buses are managed by Himachal Pradesh Tourism.
  • Manali-Sarchu (225 kms). Leave Manali and drive in the greater Himalayas to Sarchu. Your first stop is Rohtang Pass. Resume your drive crossing Tandi Keylong, Jispa, Darcha and Baralacha La Pass. Driving time will take approximately 8 hours.
  • Sarchu - Leh (250 Kms) : Drive to Leh crossing Lachulung La Pass, Pang Village and Taglang la Pass. Driving time will be around 8 hours.
B. Srinagar-Leh: This route is open from June to November, covering 434km. The highway of NH1D connects Srinagar and Leh. You can also hire a car/gypsy/jeep, or take a bus managed by Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation. The buses run between Srinagar & Leh. This WOW itinerary will take you to the stunning Kashmir and Ladakh.
  • Arrival at Srinagar: Check in early morning and start your sightseeing in Srinagar, which includes Nishat Garden, Mughal Garden, and Shalimar Bagh. Later, take a Shikara ride on Dal Lake. You can also choose to spend the night in a houseboat.
  • Srinagar-Kargil (210 km). After departing Srinagar, you will enter Sonmarg. This means "Meadow of Gold". Continue your journey via Zoji La Pass (11,575 ft). Also, visit Vijay Samarak (Kargil War Memorial), and the legendary Tiger Hill on the Road to Kargil.
  • Kargil to Leh (224km): Begin your journey for Leh, and stop at Lamayuru Monastery on the way. This monastery is the oldest in Ladakh. It is known for its wall paintings, murals, scriptures, and statues of Buddhas and other Buddhist Deities. Continue driving to Alchi Monastery and Sangam, which are the confluences of two rivers. It will take approximately five hours.

Which road trip route to choose...Manali-Leh or Srinagar-Leh?

You must have heard that Leh Ladakh bike trip don't just focus on the destination, but the journey. This is true! Both routes offer breathtaking views of the natural world. These trips will test your physical and mental strength in the harsh terrains and unpredictable climate conditions. It is an excellent way to gradually get used to Leh's atmosphere. You can drive up the mountains and valleys, rather than landing at the airport.

Ladakh Travel Health guide

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the most common illness among first-timers. This can be caused by climbing the mountain ranges. If AMS isn't treated, it will ruin your entire trip. Symptoms include headaches, vomiting, sleep difficulties, dizziness and shortness of breath. Here are some precautionary tips:
  • The number one rule to keep hydrated is to drink plenty of fluids.
  • Camphor works as a portable oxygen tube and clears your mind each time you inhale. You can carry Camphor on a piece of cloth, or Vicks Inhaler if camphor is in it.
  • Slowly walk, it is best to slow down and take small steps so you don't run.
  • Eat light and frequent.
  • Keep chocolate, energy bars, chewing gums with you on the trip to avoid tiredness or nausea.
  • Keep medications such as Diamox (For AMSM) for headaches, stomach ache, or upset stomach, Volini Spray.
  • Don't spend more than 20-30 mins on Khardung La Pass' or Changla Pass’ top. It can cause altitude sickness.
