The Scale of the Universe

  • Anisa Hamid
The Astronomy Festival at the Bangalore Planetarium required an interactive, inexpensive give-away communicating the scale of the universe.
This wristband equates every triangular fold to one light-year. It explains the division of the universe, beginning with the Galaxy, that is 10(5) light years in diameter, followed by a group of galaxies 10(6) light years in diameter, a cluster 10(7) light years and so on. This was translated from a textbook diagram (above).
The various fold combinations facilitate a comparative understanding of scale.
