The Vase Lamp

  • Darwin Simmonds
In a bid to lend a resurrecting hand to multifaceted design and to play to the contemporary yearnings for minimalistic and functional products a project was undertaken. In order to create a hybrid object, three commonplace domestic accessories where selected: the lamp, the flower vase and visual/graphical art. Ceramics being the material of choice gave clear grounds for design, a form capable of holding flowers in the traditional manner, providing a surface to act as the canvas for personality and a mechanical twist that would allow a transition between being more than just a decorative vase but a lamp also.
There are two main bodies:
The Orange Collection and The Cobalt Collection, followed by a Monochrome Edition and then a small spinoff sister-project which takes form and function into question. Surface decoration across all collections aims to follow certain simplistic factors: loud colour and a singular glaze application technique. These ingredients were combined to create a product that offers multifunctional design in a tasteful and stylistic fashion whilst conveying a bold aesthetic zeal.
