Time's Up: The Evolving Portrayal of Women in Media

  • Payu Tiwari

Five part feature series covering varied portrayals of women in film and TV

Art imitates life; it influences life. Scrutinising the media that surrounds us to explore some of the dire issues we face today has been consistently done over the years. With this project, I attempt to do the same but from a feminist perspective. The aim of this project is to explore the nuances of portrayal and perception of women in popular media. We will see various issues that have been tossed around over the years, discussed in detail for the reader to ponder over. The goal is to ignite a conversation around these subjects and take the air of exclusivity away from phrases such as “women’s issues”. This air of exclusivity prohibits greater participation in the discussion. Women are a part of the society and their issues are every other person’s issues as well. In this five- feature series, we will be looking at the various discussions, developments and controversies surrounding female representation in media over the recent years, and the real- life ripple effects they cause. We will see how erudite concepts filter down to cause instances of rampant sexism and misogyny; how the media, much like the society, for the longest time has mistreated women, and how all of us can do better.
