Transnistria

  • Inge Clemente
Transnistria is a self proclaimed country in eastern Europe, sandwiched between Ukraine and Moldova. Officially known as Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, it broke away from the later after a 2 year conflict in 1992. This conflict originated after the dissolution of the USSR, unlike Moldova, Transnistria chose not to separate from the Russian Federation.
No other country recognise it as one, except for Russia. Despite this diplomatic limbo, they have their own constitution, borders, passport, currency and a soviet past that is still very much present. The majority of the population is of Russian or Ukrainian ethnicity. It is also said to be a smuggling hub of arms, drugs, oil and human trafficking.
