TREND FORECAST: NEW STOMPING GROUND

As the V&A Museum announces one of its major exhibitions for 2020 as “Handbags: Inside Out”, we are starting to see designers on-and-off the runways playing with the concept of the ‘hand’ bag. Reminiscent of post-prison ankle-monitors, we first saw the likes of Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel downsizing the infamous 2.55 to ankle-grazing proportions for his Spring Summer 2008 show, before it reappeared on Costume Designer and Stylist Shiona Turini at the Fall 2019 Couture week. So, as the size of accessories continues to shrink, becoming more fashion over function, it makes sense that wearers go hands-free, and from Prada to Moschino, utility style pouches, mini backpacks and lipstick holders are being strapped to models’ ankles before they hit the runway. Yet, whether this styling trick will hit peak remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain, the only way is up from here.
